Whether filing cabinets, vintage kitchen storage or anything in between, metal cabinets usually are more drab than fab when it comes to appearance. Customize the cabinet with a fresh coat of paint, graphics or coverings that turn the cabinet into an interesting piece of furniture for your abode. With a little tweaking, the cabinet may turn into an expression of your sense of decor.
Duct tape isn't just the go-to, fix-everything silvery substance it once was. Tape is available in bold colors and patterns -- use several varieties to create stripes, chevrons or pixel-style art. Another nice benefit of duct tape is it may turn even a rusty, ugly cabinet into a work of art while protecting it from further wear. Spills atop duct tape easily wipe away, creating a piece suitable for any room of the house.
For an open-style cabinet with a back, or a cabinet that has random stains and imperfections inside, fabric covers a multitude of flaws. Wrap a piece of stylish fabric around a piece of cardboard or foam core board cut to fit the bottom, side walls or back wall of the cabinet, securing it with tape. Press it in place in the cabinet and you've got an instant inside makeover. Removable doors also may be covered with fabric once door hardware is removed, then set back in place for custom cabinet styling.
Decals, Stencils and Graphics
Vinyl decals intended for home decor customize a metal cabinet in an instant. This turns even a new cabinet into a specialized piece. If you'd rather create the art yourself, stencil or stamp designs onto the cabinet, or paint designs by hand with metal paints. For an unusual look, a grate, potato bag or other item laden with holes becomes a template for a new coat of spray paint, leaving behind an interesting two-toned pattern.
Paint and Hardware
Cabinets often look good but just aren't available in a color you like. Spray paint them with metal paints or textured paints to give them a new look. If the cabinet has drawers or doors, paint each a slightly lighter shade for a fade or ombre look. Swap out boring handles for stylish new hardware, or repaint the old in a new color that contrasts the cabinets.
